The new Animal Blood Values (ABV) is cooler in design and more powerful in features. With an updated, yet editable, blood database of over 46 species of animals, ABV stands out with an expanded unit converter and glossary. An added information (e.g. body temperature, gestation duration, scientific name) of several species is included. Veterinarians, technicians and students can now use ABV to record and evaluate blood values of patients of different species in tabular form.

Animals listed in the program are the following: dog, cat, horse, cattle, sheep, goat, swine, baboon, rhesus, ferret, gerbil, guinea pig, hamster, mouse, rat, rabbit, African grey parrot, amazon parrot, broiler chicken, budgerigar, caique, canary, cockatiel, cockatoo, conure, dove, duck, eagle, emu, hawk, lorry, lovebird, macaw, mynah, ostrich, parakeet, parrotlet, pionus, rosella, swan, toucan, boa, iguana, monitor lizard, python and turtle box.

ABV runs on Palm OS 3.5 & higher, Pocket PC 2002 / Windows CE 3.x, Pocket PC 2003, and Windows Mobile 5.0 PocketPC. ABV will not work on Windows Mobile 5.0 Smartphones.

FEATURES

REFERENCE DATABASE WINDOW

Blood parameters are divided under Hematology & Clinical Chemistry. Complete values (except uric acid & bile acid) are seen in companion and domesticated animals, while laboratory & exotic animals are filled up only with values of common parameters.

Users may now edit values directly. Select a species, enter the new value, and tap on the save button (diskette icon) found on the top right corner of the table. Saving is only done on values displayed on screen.

EVALUATION WINDOW

Users may now enter patient records under each species. This is done by selecting species, typing of the patient's name, and tapping on the diskette icon found leftmost. A prompt will appear asking you whether to “SAVE”, “WRITE” or “CANCEL.”

Choose SAVE if you want to add a new record. Adding of new records is denied if the same name exists under the selected species.

Choose WRITE if you want to update an existing record. Updating is denied if no record exists.

Values will be assessed as HIGH, LOW or NORMAL. Assessing is solely dependent on existing database values. If no values exist for the selected parameter, a QUESTION MARK <?> will appear.

To assess values of a patient, enter the data, check the parameters, then tap on the diskette icon. Choose SAVE if this is a new record, or WRITE if this is an update. The values will be assessed immediately (high, normal, low, ?). NOTE: Assessment is done only on values displayed.

CONVERTER WINDOW

Select target unit and parameter to convert. Enter values by tapping on the keypads. Conversion is done automatically.

GLOSSARY WINDOW

A list of terms used in the program is provided with definitions. To look for a term, scroll the list box or just type the word.

Upon typing, the list box will display items that match your word. Tap on the displayed item to read of its definition.

The 3 font buttons (letter A) will adjust font sizes of the displayed definition.

SPECIES INFORMATION

An added information (e.g. gestation duration, body temperature, scientific name, etc.) is included on species listed in the program.

The 3 font buttons (letter A) will adjust font sizes of the displayed information.
